A Word From Dr. Bruce Main
“I hated this school,” shared Marla as she glanced across my desk with a devilish grin on her face. Marla graduated from the UrbanPromise Academy back in 2003. I remembered her angry most the time, but the adolescent angst was gone—she was returning as an energetic, happy, young professional.
“The school was too small,” she persisted. “Everybody was in everybody’s business. Then my dad died… and I got pregnant.”
Marla paused for a moment, looked confidently in my eyes and continued: “I thought it was over. I thought I’d just drop out—become a statistic but people here didn’t give up on me. It was like family. Nobody would let me quit.
Philadelphia School of Design was her next step after her graduation, followed by a season in freelance photography. Marla has now been accepted into the Engineering program at Ohio State. “I want to go into urban, industrial design!
